And this one reminds me of a story by Jonathan Lethem.
 It's in his short story collection and I beleive it's
the first one.   It tells the story about a guy who's
dead and in hell, but his family has petitioned to
keep him alive half of the time because they need the
income.  The content of Hell is mostly emotional and,
in this guy's case, it's all symbolic of childhood
sexual trauma.  It gets worse from there.
