One of the more Puritanical sects that founded our contry had such beliefs... I think it was the Calvinists, but could be completely wrong.  But money was seen as a reward and sign you were going to heaven.

How they explained successful businessmen of other faiths and those who clearly sinned to obtain money, like the mafia, I don't know.
