Discovering good britpop is like discovering well-brewed coffee after only
drinking instant for years. You're amazed at how good it can be, and
suddenyl appalled at the crap that you previously liked.

"This is hardcore" is an excellent suggestion for UA soundtrack, but not
necessarily for the lyrics, which you noted. A good RPG soundtrack may have
a few lyrics that you hear and recognise, but on the whole peple will be too
busy talking to hear most of the meaning of the song.

It's like being at a party; if the song would create mood and ambiance even
when you can't make out the words, it will work for an rpg soundtrack.

"This is hardcore" is a good suggestion for the same reason that "Sober" by
Tool is; musically it creates an appropriate mood, and you'll hear just
enough words to get the right idea.

Many Kate Bush, Enigma, and Tori Amos songs work on the same principle, if
you don't have them too loud; selection should be appropriate to the themes
and mood of your game, of course. Film soundtracks can be great; "Gladiator"
works well for fantasy; "Dark City" for suspense and supernatural action;
Philip Glass' "Dracula" for horror and mystery; Gabriel's "Passion" for
gyptienne fantasy and middle-eastern stuff.

Oddly, I knew the "Higher Learning" soundtrack very well before I actually
saw the film. It actually increased the emotional impact of many scenes for
me, because I was so familiar with the emotions of many songs.

My Call of Cthulhu GM uses the Three Colours soundtracks for a lot of his
1920s games. Even if I had not see Bleu two or three times, I would know it
by heart by now.

If this GM were on the UA list, he'd have much better advice; he has
Soundtracking True, whilst I only have level 5 or so of Soundtracking Ways.
However, my prac teaching gave me much more Photocopying Ways then him -
what you loose on the swings, etc.

Cheers,
