I wouldn't allow this.  Drug use is a means to an end and the drug
used varied by end desired.  The alchemy idea works for me with drugs
like DMT,LSD, Peyote, etc. but would seem to fall into the shaman
category generally.  Amphetamine users and coke addicts would seem to
be into it for the thrill (having a 'bigger,better,more' attitude),
while Heroin and Opium addicts would be attempting to escape from life
entirely.

So the archetypes in each case would be:
The Shaman (attempting to induce connection with the outside world)
Too Much is Never Enough (no matter how good the last high was, the
next one has to be better.  Of course this high could be based on
cocaine or on base jumping or on shark wrestling)
The Zero - attempting to escape the harshness of the world by
destroying your interactions with it.

I wouldn't say that any of these were drug based, but merely that
drugs could be part of the paraphernalia of the archetype and that
anyone really embodying them would be likely to indulge in drug use as
an aid.
