As a historian, I recall being told I'd never get a job without crawling
over the corpses of the people with tenure.  The boomers had ridden victim
history into power and were not going to leave unless we found a way of
putting in the axe - like the French economics students.

I think "history from below" might well have been one of these generational
retoolings of cliomancy.
