I've tried gaslight UA before, and I just couldn't get quite the
right feel from it. But then we had a discussion on the list
kind of about "how modern was post-modern" and we sorta cranked
it back slowly, decade by decade. I think if I keep my
alt.history engine keyed to Nick Meyers' drug-addled Holmes, the
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Dickens, my own school of
magick based on the Bronte sisters, Alice in Wonderland, Hammer
and AI films, I could grind something out, without relying on
all the usual preferred steampunk tropes, which are what
generally trip me up. If the Industrial Revolution was what
dispelled ignorance and superstition, and killed God, then I
guess it's not an inherently faulty era in which to set UA. As
to depth, I think it's pretty deep around here already.
