I doubt Kirby could be a valid Icon. He's quite simply not recognizable enough. Based on current (and past) comic sales, I doubt 100 million people recognize his name, much less his face (although many times that are aware of his creations, he's not near as well known as they are). I myself don't have any idea what he looked like, though I know I've seen pictures. I can identify Stan Lee on sight, though (or a variety of other comic creators).
Other artistic Icons could be interesting, though. Andy Warhol could qualify, and would be interesting (which, to relate back to the Kirby topic, reminds me of an interesting Neil Gaiman issue of Miracleman involving several Andy Warhol clones. I wonder about using Miracleman in Ua somehow)
I think I recall the Iconic requirements right there, but it's along those lines, anyway.
