>See, this is exactly my point. I can buy mythical kingship in a ritualistic, anointed way (which is exactly why I don't think it's very UA-- it's tied into an increasingly passe worldview), but True Kings of Comic Book Artists, Meter Maids, et cetera strike me not as "irreverent" but "goofy".
What I was trying to suggest is that people actually do treat Jack Kirby as if he were a king. His name is almost synonymous with super hero comics (just as the european kings were synonymous with their kingdoms) and he performed various kingly duties (guiding those lower, etc). I truly doubt he was the greatest comic artist there was, but he was adored by the rest of the comic industry.
'goofy' or not, he's got something going for him.
