I believe "barebacking" is just unprotected anal sex. I don't think it's
actual AIDS roulette, though it's often criticized as such by safe-sex
advocates for obvious reasons and perhaps that's where the misunderstanding
comes from. But that's a side effect, not a goal.

Here in Seattle a gay nightclub was advertising "bareback Thursdays!" or
something, by which they meant that if you showed up without a shirt you'd
get in free. But the ad campaign was clearly a nudge-nudge wink-wink thing
referring to the sexual slang. They got in minor hot water with local AIDS
activists as a result.

ObUA: Very little jargon escapes intact from a subculture. It becomes a
Typhoid Mary of current desires and fears, acquiring a contextual viral
payload and passing it on via Jay Leno to the mainstream. Slang is an urban
legend.
