Or better yet, leaving a bunch of "tainted" metal around for them to
eat. For instance, if they are indicriminate about what kinds of metal
to use to make babies (and how smart are these things anyway?), you
might leave a bunch of large lead deposits around for them. A few lead
gears might be enough to render a new machine inoperative (or at least
sterile), and if you taint the local metal "ecosystem" with enough lead,
you'd eventually be able to catch all of them.
