A few more ideas on stuff involving edible clay.
In a lot of older vampire stories, you've got the vampire carrying around
boxes of the soil of home, and needing to sleep in it. In the bible
you've got Naaman carting around a load of soil from Israel. Plus you've
got the whole "the king and the land are one" thing.
Obviously, the family is trying to send some of their native land to their
son, to renew his ties to their homeland. Why? Let's say the son's using
some school of true king-like magic. It allows the adept to control
events around the world, but the paradox requires that the adept remain
on the land he was born on. Adepts of this school in the past who wanted
to see the world they were influencing have tried the trick with the boxes
of soil, but they broke taboo if they ever left the box, and they can only
charge up back on their land. These people are trying to keep him
constantly in connection with the land by incorperating it into his body,
so he's always in contact with it no matter where he goes. Unfortunately,
his supply is running out, and a rival adept tried to block his getting a
new supply by using random magick to cause the quarantine, and that's why
the family/cabal had Patrick checking up on it to make sure it gets there
before he runs out and breaks taboo.
Simple, really.
