As far as the clay eating goes, I can't remember where, but I've heard of
that as a practice in parts of Africa. Apparently, in some parts of the
world, the ancient volcanic activity (I think) fixed certain nutrients into
the soil. Probably nitrates, but perhaps sulfur compounds as well. Well, in
some of those same areas, farming conditions can be pretty rough or
culturally nonexistent. In these cases, the people actually gain sustenance
from the clay that can't from their regular diet. Interesting stuff; I'll
see if I can't find out some more about it and give links to back it up.
Also, I worked this into the culture of a fantasy race one time, but I
combined it with a ritual lithophagy idea.
As for the fact that you work in a Dead Letter's Office, I just find that
damn cool. I've been wanting to work that idea into a UA campaign since I
found the game. I was inspired by the beginning of Clive Barker's _Great and
Secret Show_ and by an interesting piece of short fiction on this list.
Patrick, please keep us informed if you find any more bizarre packages in
your office. Especially any funny looking crosses.
