How about the imperfection in the Lunchboxes be a cause for their downfall?
Sort of like one of the LLs develops a megalomaniacal complex, makes some of
the other LLs follow him, and they all dismember each other in a war. That
would explain their inability to leave a small area.

I like the idea of them taking a short while to reproduce, but that they
need a period of time between reproductions that is longer. Maybe the LLs
develop a vital component (brain?)for reproduction inside themselves that
requires a longer amount of time; after that's done, it can produce the body
in 8 hours, implant the component and voila.

Somebody stop me before I come up with any more whacked ideas. . .
