A good point. I have not yet seen "Bringing Out the Dead"
but I imagine that this driver is something of a head case.
But I'd be more inclined to believe a neurotic/psychotic
can keep a job as an ambulance driver than a drunkard. On
the other hand, I can dig the dark and twisted aspect that
the fate of the injured rests in the clammy palms of the
alcoholic who hasn't slept in 28 hours.
And that fits in well with the concept that our society
places a lot of responsibility on people who shouldn't be
allowed to even take care of a kitten. A lot of times
while I'm driving (especially on I-95 from Wilmington to
the Philadelphia airport), I think about how I interact
with hundreds (or perhaps thousands) of other people that I
wouldn't trust to check my mail while I'm gone. Yet, I
trust that one of those people does not swerve into my car
or throw hazardous rubbish out his window or jump the
median after a blowout.
