I see steampunk as a strong flavor that doesn't play well with others.
Like licorice (which I also don't much like).  If you're going to do
steampunk/weird science, fine, do that -- but don't try to add it to your
occult intrigue game, or your wild west horror game.  I tried to keep
"gadgeteer" rules out of GODLIKE, because I've always seen them as "My
super power is that I can build machines that duplicate anyone else's super
power!"  Dennis was adamant, so I think we wound up with something
resembling game balance.

Who wishes that the mechanomancy rules had been a bit more specific about
limitations.
