I don't even think most have what would be considered bad obsession (rather, attempting to achieve some desirable goal), just a bad way of achieving their obsession.  A religious zealot, for example, does what he does (killing infidels and the like) because he's trying to help himself or others.  It's just that some others (the infidels, for example) don't really like how he goes about doing that (what with the getting killed and all).  Even someone like a serial killer is likely after some recognizable goal (sexual pleasure, power, etc) towards which killing people is a means, but the end (isolated from the killing) isn't wrong in itself.

Of course, some people might think that another's ends are evil (a Savage avatar's opinion of a scientist, and vice versa) but that's a different matter.

At least, that's how I imagine things, and it seems a lot more interesting (ethically, to me) than having people with obsessions that are recognized by everyone (even themselves) as bad.
