Technically he was a recall coordinator.  He didn't work for insurance
companies, he worked for automotive companies.  He also wasn't concerned
with individual settlements, he calculated whether or not it was worth
recalling cars or settling X cases.

There's a thorough discussion of one of these "bean counters" in a film
called class action which is an excellent legal drama and fairly UAble,
though differently than Fight Club or survivor.  I believe Ralph Nader's
book Unsafe at Any Speed about the Ford Pinto discussed the "bean counters"
and recall process.
