People in the 50s thought they were scary.

Incidentally, I don't think of steampunk as silly, but
it probably is.  Actually, I don't have a problem with
silly being in the midst of something scary.  I'd say
both Dead Alive and Evil Dead do a great job of being
both silly and scary.  

Is it just me or are gamers absolutely terrified of
being silly lately?  Why is that, I wonder?
