I can see where you're going with this -- sort of a Salieri/Mozart
thing, where a man finds his life manipulated by someone else. The
manipulation seems malicious, but it's actually designed to steer the
"victim" toward his destiny. Odin plays this role in a few stories,
showing up and screwing up the lives of various heroes with alternating
blessings and curses. In the end, he shows up to collect his due.

This is the role of a certain archetype, perhaps -- the Trickster, most
likely.
