One of the UA fictions I read somewhere on the internet (I'm uncertain where now) talked about rituals being leftover bits of how prior incarnations of the universe worked. Now, they make no sense at all, but that's how all the physical laws used to work (perhaps many incarnations back) I like that explanation of them a lot (also, I imagine this means the Comte knows just about any given ritual, which might be so anyway)
