I think along the same lines... in the course of a day, any Joe/Jane
Schmoe will act towards half a dozen (if not more) archetypes. In the
morning, Jean Q. Public may be channeling the Grouch (or the Early
Bird), and at work the Merchant or Necessary Servant or whitener's
appropriate to what he does for a living, and the Faithful Boyfriend (to
use the rulebook example) when he's on the phone with his SO-- because
*every* normal person acts a little bit different around different
people or situations. You might be slightly channeling one or another
path, but the instant you switch gears in the way you act, you fall out
of alignment with the archetype.

Personally, I would think that once you switch gears to adapt to
different social situations (and therefore start to follow another
appropriate archetype's path) you lose all connection with the previous
archetype-- the exception being, if your *overall* behavior conforms to
one: for instance, a Merchant who uses her social skills to swindle
customers, by acting like someone they can closely relate to (in other
words, differently for each customer), while still maintaining ties with
the Merchant avatar, because she's still making successful deals.
