The difference is less about how much you know about the school, and more about how much you're willing to give up for the power of the school.  This seems like a standard UA sort of thing.  The adept that is most willing to cut himself, put himself at risk, destroy his memories, lose coherence through alcohol or sleep deprivation, etc, is going to win over the one who's more restrained (which often means more sane in this instance).
