Why not make them identical twins?  The parents are occult practitioners who
have identical (or perhaps Siamese) twins.  Using proxy magic, they learn
how to make the golden child a powerful Epideromancer prodigy who uses the
whipping boy to build charges.  Pretty straight forward but not any less
creepy.
