in the campaign i was going to run (and still will if i get the chance) i
was running with an idea i nicked out of warren ellis' comic Planetary.
basically each iteration of the universe is just a computation in some
unimaginably vast extradimensional "machine" (which some people would
consider to be god). the makeup of the IC before reboot is the result of
that computation. after a certain number of iterations the machine will have
worked out whatever equation it started out with.
i was playing with the idea of the characters eventually discovering this,
and also finding out that our current world is the final computation. so not
only is the universe about to reboot, but there'll be no new universe
afterwards.
