This reminds me of the "auditing" concept from
Scientology (I am not a Scientologist.)
The idea is that our souls carry around bad memories
from our pasts and that's what makes us act like jerks
today. The real trick of it is that you may be
carrying around negative impulses from your PAST LIVES
and auditing is supposed to help you work through
these hang-ups (you have to buy tons of books before
you find this out -most of which my wife found tossed
out in mouldy bins at this Goodwill across from a
strip club.)
Has anyone ever tried to work scientology into their
game? If you haven't had a chance to see their
recruitment video, I heartily reccommend it. The
opening bit with the monkeys is worth being locked in
a dark room by people who make Focus on the Family
Stepford Wives look like hippies. If you get a chance
to take their opening audit, do so as well. It
invokes a wealth of scary images for UA campaigns
every time I remember it. (My wife went in to the
Scientology church in portland while smashed and they
threw her and her friend out for laughing during the
recruitment video.)
The best part of the recruitment video is the bit
which says "This is not a threat. If you don't get
with our program now, you will suffer for the next
1,000 years." Now THAT is a way to get the whole
Invisible College thing across to players.
Of course, after obtaining a high enough level in
Scientology, you discover that humans are, in fact,
psychic overbeings from outerspace who were destroyed
in volcanoes by atomic bombs sometime during
prehistory by an evil space tyrant. (The space tyrant
resembles John Travolta's character in Battlefield
Earth. Isn't that strange? Please do not send me
snakes.)
