Perhaps myths of Atlantis are remnants of older incarnations. Heck, perhaps many or all religions and mythologies are based upon previous versions of the cosmos. The gods of ancient Greece could all easily be examples of a time when the claws of the tiger didn't exist, and godwalkers of various archetypes ruled the earth.
Perhaps a time when the golden arches of McD's was the symbol of the dominant religion, always on religious crusades (or perhaps this works better for the next incarnation).
Take the encyclopedia down from the shelf, cut it into pieces and miz them around. Piece it back together, and you've got a different incarnation of the universe, where George Washington discovered electricity and Saddam Hussein was the first European to visit the new world. Or something like that.
Alternatively, watch some episodes of Sliders.
