I believe the technical name for this is "memory confabulation" -- a number
of similar experiences get compressed into one archetypal 'memory' that
gets modified for different concrete circumstances.  It's sort of like how
some artists depict the same pose over and over, just with different
features and clothing?

The corollary to this is that a good percentage of what we remember never
actually happened.  This seems very plausible when applied to other people,
but it's very hard to believe it about oneself.

If the reinstatement of capital punishment was clearly doing nothing to
reduce the number of murders in those states permitting it, it certainly
appeared to be cutting down on the number of confessions.
