The neat part at the beginning of Riverworld, though,
is when Burton panics and begins to plummet between
the rows of suspended people.
That scene, in itself, reminds me of the "Minus" scene
from Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, where one
of Charlie's grandparents has taken too much youth
elixir and gone to the place where you are before,
well, you are.
And that reminds me of those creatures at the top of
the elevator who could only spell "Scram" even though
they wanted to kill and eat everyone. That reminds me
of shuggoths and shuggoths remind me of "Dreams in the
Witch House," which is a very interesting idea for a
UA plot based around Hag nightmares.
You've got a young guy, perhaps one of the
investigators -probably a cliomancer- who takes up
residence in a shunned and ill-remembered, but famous,
house. No other cliomancer wants to touch it. The
catch is the constant "someone's sitting on my chest"
nightmares that come with living in the place. Is it
because of a ghost, some demon who enjoys autoerotic
asphyxiation and is trying to find a live body to
relive its own perversely pleasureable last moments?
Maybe its someone reaching through time or the house
itself is like that one book which writes its author
into someone else's personality.
Maybe its just a gas leak from an old pipe because the
house should have been condemned years ago.
