What if the briefcase included a photo album that used to belong to a
Mechanomancer? To veer into the arena of pitifully small stakes and
pathetic motivations, the mechanomancer might want it back because he's
given up all the memories in it and wants to rebuild them. The other side
could want it because they either figure anything this guy wants must be
important, or just because they don't want him to have it.
