Really I think the best suggestion so far is some sort of apology.  If some 
duke receives an apology it sort of defuses his excuse to build a hate 
campagin among his sycophants and hangers on.  If he accepts the apology he 
agrees to make peace.  If he refuses he loses face.  It's a lose/lose 
scenario when you've built your personal empire on a petty occult cold war.
