I beleive in the flurry of suggestions which precede
mine, someone suggested that the breifcase be a decoy
or a red herring, which might be a great idea (unless
your players get physically violent when eternally
frustrated.) Certainly the most popular cinematic or
literary treatment would demand that the breifcase
turn out to be a secondary consideration.
If you would like to make it a MacGuffin, something I
would happily do because I consider myself much too
poor to allow myself intellectual license, you might
want to give it a Borges-type spin.
The three Mexicans (are they from Chihuaha, by the
way? Or are they from further south? Might they hail
from the central mountains or even closer to the sea?
If they're from the mountainous interior, they might
be Zapatistas or some other revolutionary paramilitary
cause. At least, I tend to think of all political
revolutionaries as being vaguely "good," since I grew
up in the US.)
Watch John Sayle's excellent "Men with Guns" for some
ideas on "south-of-the-boder" vaguely-mystic
adventures. (Come to think of it, there's an
important breifcase in that movie, too, only, in this
case, it's medicine.) Come to think of it, you might
want to use the idea of the mix-up from Robert
Rodriguez's "El Mariachi" (not the sequel with Antonio
"Snorro" Banderas and Selma "pure totty" Hayek.)
Mythology always seems to sneak into my games, so the
breifcase would either contain Ross Perot's membership
file from the Gnomes of Zurich (and evidence that
NAFTA coincides with George Washington's plan to
committ genocide on the "original savage inhabitants"
of the Americas) or the dried, shrivelled testicles of
the most powerful preist of Xipe ("the flayed one")
who ever lived.
