I almost hate to suggest this, because the technique has become sort of
corny and cheesy. Sort of cheesecorny. Like Nacho-Flavored CornNuts. Mmmm.
But I digress. If you can set it up so the case *almost* gets opened a
couple times, offering a clue as to what might be inside, the players
typically fill in the blank as to their own dream/nightmare for might be in
it. I would only suggest that the clue *not* be a bright glow, a la Kiss Me
Deadly, Repo Man, Pulp Fiction and others too numerous. Maybe a cloying,
overpoweringly sweet smell that lingers in the room for hours. Hey--and if
there were some kind of chase after it, that would be a tantalizer. "And in
the room, there's a cloying, overp . . ." "We're on the right track, boys!"
You could have them sidetracked by a bakery truck or a man carrying a
cornflower. I don't know. In these situations, I always try to somehow
elicit something from the players, and build from that.
