Okay, what I was imagining was that the Occult
Underground worked pretty much like any subculture. I
figured all the stuff with adepts and avatars was
pretty much common knowledge. There were those quotes
from the various important entities in the front of
the book and I sort of assumed chracters could read
that somewhere (in pamphlets or interviews, etc.)
People talk, even secretive ones. If something works
people hear about it. They may find it ridiculous or
silly, but they hear things.
As for werewolves, vampires, revenants and demons, I
gathered all the information in the book was sort of
the prevailing Conventional Wisdom.
That isn't to say that the information always comes
across crystal clear or that my players ever have time
to do more than skim an rpg book when I give it to
them, but it seems like most people who "get into" a
thing pick up bits and peices of knowledge, whether
they pursue it vigorously or not.
I guess I play the smartypants version then, although
I never make anyone not in the UA Dirt Ignorant -just
cynical or apathetic or ethically opposed to even
looking. I foresee great difficulties finding RPGers
who'll enjoy that appellation.
