I am a little disappointed with the Aussies on this list; particularly the ones
from Sydney. How come I had to hear from the commentators at the Olympic
opening ceremony about the nutter who wrote the word 'Eternity' all over Sydney
in yellow chalk? Arthur Stace was a drunkard whose sisters ran brothels. One
day he finds religion and feels called by God to write the word 'Eternity' in
yellow chalk or crayon on the sidewalks and buildings of Sydney, in the places
God tells him to go. He manages to do this anonymously for twenty years or so,
until outed in a newspaper article on June 21st, 1956. During the millennium
celebration this year, 'Eternity' is written in glowing letters on the harbor
bridge. I quote the organisor: "It's incredibly Sydney. It symbolised for me
the madness, mystery and magic of the city." It then shows up in the Olympic
opening ceremony.
I found a good article here:

sure there are others.
