I'd just like to say that, while I don't agree with Joanna, I _definitely_ see where she's coming from. What first attracted me to UA was a review of the ashcan copy on rpg.net, stressing the "actions have consequences" side of the game, the "we did it" philosophy, and so on. When I bought the gam e I have to confess to being somewhat bemused as to the "point" of it- the undue emphasis on the NG tape being one of the main culprits (until it was explaine in LG&$). I put it to one side as something to steal stuff from, and it wasn't until I joined this list (during the "how I went insane contemplating infinity" thread") that the scales fell from my eyes,& I realised what it was "about" (btw, I think that the supplements put acoss the "feel" of UA far better than the core)
So what I'm saying is that Jo's reaction seems to be perfectly understandable based upon the main rulebook, which, I'm sorry to say, doesn't really do a great job in putting across the point of UA.
Sorry about this not being a proper reply, I've been following the list via the archives for the past coupla months (summer break, no web access at home, using local library which doesn't allow e-mail use, yadda yadda yadda).
