I keep wondering about various Olympian athletes being avatars of something (perhaps just The Athlete).  The connection to ancient Greek semi-religious activites would only seem to reinforce this. Probably Greece would be the first place someone ascended as the Athlete, as that's the first place I'm aware of that athletics was prized for itself rathert than, say, as a way of being better prepared for battle, though athletics was prized for this as well.  Just the naming convention of calling it the Olympics provides mythic connections to ancient heros and gods (gods and heros obviously being old metaphors for the IC and avatars).
