And suddenly, I'm reminded of a lesser emergency when I missed a bus that
was going to take me from a small town in Illinois to St. Louis for a
wedding.  I desperately accosted a stranger who knew where the bus was
going to be and who gave me a ride there.  I guess I looked harmless.

Is there some benevolent occult principle that gets people where they need
to be?  Is there some devastating price that must be paid?

Eh, maybe not.
