There are a couple of stories about the fate of Virginia Dare -- the first 
English child born in America.  I kind of like the idea of Virginia as an 
Avatar, and the disappearance of the townfolk being the consequence of her 
ascension to the Clergy...but I can't think of an archetype that she could 
clearly represent.  I seem to recall something about her turning into a 
white deer, but that doesn't help me much.

I did a net search and didn't find any really outstanding sites, but this

has a nice collection of links.

Also, for an extremely weird and twisted take upon the story of Roanoke, 
check out a story called "Croatan" in Harlan Ellison's _Strange Wine_.  I'm 
not 100% certain of the title of that particular story, but every single 
story in the book is worth reading.  "From A to Z In the Chocolate Alphabet" 
is my favorite -- it's a collection of short snippets and story ideas.
