How about a Taboo of never doing anything with maths that isn't pure maths?  A
lot of the higher maths never gets applied to the real world - at least not by
mathematicians.  You can spend a lot of time solving problems in terms of
variables without ever using real numbers. So it's okay for you to spend hours
working on a new way of integrating closed paths within a four dimensional
complex plane but balancing your checkbook breaks taboo.

Amusing maths annecdote that demonstrates this:  Someone was sitting in a third
year maths tutorial when he turned to the person next to him and asked "What's
that back to front delta symbol on the third line mean?"
His friend replied "It's the number six"
