The counter-argument to that is to draw a parallel to (for example)
historical racism. The average Jew in 18th century England probably had a
much better understanding of his English neighbors than those neighbors had
of the Jew. Why? Because his lack of social power meant that he had to
conform to the majority.
Now, this is a little shakier with 20th century women. Things are changing
fast (in terms of historical time) and they're changing for the better, but
it was not long ago that women couldn't vote and weren't expected to work.
I think I live in a sexist society. I think that male is the "default
gender" just as white is the "default race." It's easier for white men to
say "that's the way it is" because they don't have to understand the
position of the Other.
On the other hand, there is certainly a difference between something that
addresses sex/sexism/sexuality and something that is "objectively sexist."
