Mixing and matching rather than confusing, actually. But you get my point.
Taking a cue from Rev's Power Kill, ... UA rewards the player for the
pursuit of porn, violence or booze in a direct way. You get power for
pursuing those things as an adept. On a superficial level, then, UA
would appeal to those people who might see such activities as worthwhile
or at least harmless in real life.
Fortunately, Rev and Greg added the pieces of the game that reflect how
such pursuits will adversely affect the mental state of the people that
do so. In a casual read, however, it would be easy to miss these. If
anything might change Joanna's mind about UA, it might be the suggestion
to look at how the game relentlessly beats down those that throw
themselves into these pursuits.
As for not ascending as the Dipsomancer ... which supplement has the
fairly obvious avatar of Bacchus roaming about?
Also, remember you don't need to care at all

Bullshit. Your magic must be your obsession skill. You must care about
it a whole lot. More than you do anything else. Simply getting drunk, or
cutting yourself up or hoarding money isn't going to give you any power whatsoever.
There are thousands out there that do those things every day. Some do
them with at least as much care at avoiding the taboo of an adept that
an adept has. But they do them to hide other pains in their life, they
get no magnetic resonance from them.
