If you are thinking about LA than I heartily reccomend checking out
zippythepinhead.com for an avatar of the fool (who actually coined the
phrase "are we having fun yet?") and abandoned bits of pop culture such as
the Doggy Diner sign. Those abandoned things make me smile.
Topic jump: Near my home is a shopping mall that has clearly passed its
prime. It still has a few stores in it that cling to life, but the majority
of the storefronts are shut up. There was once a Woolworth's department
store in the center that took up three floors. When it shut down no other
store took its place. Since it was the center of this mall (a mile long
corridor with side passages that housed things like GNC) it pretty much
meant that you could only walk from one end of the mall to the other on the
ground floor. In turn more stores left.
Now the whole place is very much empty. There are a few photo booths and
some fast food places (Pretzel Time, Bagel world, Orange Julius, Lucky
Pizza, and The China Corner), the ubiquitous Waldenbooks and the campaign
headquaters of a couple doomed third party third party candidates. They
lost the last bit of youth clientele when they became the last shopping mall
to prohibit smoking. Last time I was there one of the movie theatres was
converted to a church while the other became a travel agency.
It's damn surreal and I would reccomend anyone to visit there to take it in
and get some popcorn from the popcorn store.
