Gang,
Found this book on my recent business trip, and picked it up.
Body Trauma - A Writer's Guide to Wounds and Injuries
By David W. Page, M.D.
ISBN 0-89879-741-1
It's part of the Howdunit Series, a collection of writer's references on
subjects ranging from poisons to police procedures, written with the goal of
allowing writers to portray such things accurately in their fiction. It is a
wonderful tool for the UA GM, in that it provides accurate information about
injuries that you can use with the hidden Wound Points to tell your players
how hurt their characters are.
>From the back of the book:
> Dr. David W. Page, a surgeon and trauma expert, takes you close in to reveal:
> - The four steps in trauma care
> - Details of skull and brain injuries
> - What the Glasgow Coma Scale is, and why it's important
> - Specifics of penetrating and blunt neck injuries
> - The "dirty dozen" dreadful - but survivable - chest injuries
> - What blunt trauma, blades and bullets do to abdominal organs
> - Effects of injuries to arms and legs, hands and feet
> - The facts about bites and stings
> - What happens in impalement injuries
> - The truths of abuse of elders, women and children
> - How organ donation works
>
> Here you'll find graphic explorations of serious bodily damage. You'll be able
> to work backward, deciding how severe a character's wounds should be and then
> writing the action that causes the pain. You'll put your characters in harm's
> way and mistreat them - believably - to within an inch of their fictional
> lives.
Aside from the utility in the realm of handling hidden Wound Points, I've
found the book to be wonderful for generating other ideas to bring into
adventures. I'd recommend giving it a look.

I gambled in two graveyards
And won against the odds
With smiling saints and silent saviours
With the maggots and the gods.
I cursed the things they showed me
I could never see again
And in the howling of the wind at night
I wrote upon the rain.
