One of the benefits of a wife that's a gamer (and beautiful. :P) is that you can say things like, "M. Night should have read UA before he wrote this movie", and she knows exactly what you mean. :-)
Based on some fragments of some ideas I'm almost positive came from this list, here's what the movie should have been about, rather than the "normal superhero" angle (which I did enjoy, despite the glacial pace of the movie):
David Dunn (Willis character) is Unbreakable. Anytime he would be hurt/take damage (in the UA sense), he unconsciously shifts it to nearby people. More serious damage equates to more serious carnage around him to keep him perfectly intact. So, everyone in the train wreck had to die for him to survive unscathed.
Mr. Glass (not the character's name, but the Sam Jackson role) is Dunn's opposite. He takes on the injuries of others. This manifests (in a UAish kinda way) by his tendency to break bones, etc.. The movie could progress in more or less the same fashion, with Dunn slowly awakening to his unique nature. Get rid of the extra superhero aspects (super-strength and what have you) and just stick with the Unbreakable bit.
The climax would be: Dunn (being an inherently decent man) realizes that he's been causing all kinds of damage to people over the course of his life and feels real bad about it. Dunn wrestles with the idea of suicide (or Glass considers murder). The big question would be how much damage would it take to "short-circuit" Dunn's abilities and kill him? What if you guess wrong and thousands of nearby innocent bystanders die? What if you succeed, but thousands still die before any damage "leaks through" to Dunn?
I'm not saying there aren't holes in the alternate movie, but it would have been more interesting, I think. Unbreakable was a good movie, but a massive waste of opportunity, IMO.
I'm pretty sure that it was something Greg said that keyed this alternate movie...?

This movie showed me more about what Greg & John were getting at
in the core book about the Occult Underground (well, fuse 8MM,
PULP FICTION, IT, and UNBREAKABLE, and that's how I think I see
the OU now). However, UNBREAKABLE was unsatisfying because I
wanted *more* of the weirdness. This is my issue with the
relative sparse nature of "real magick" in the canon OU. I just
want more-- bigger, faster, louder, now.
