What if it wasn't a dub, but something incredibly similar
developed "independently?" I'm thinking about Charlie
Manson's album, which sounds like a crazy man listened to
the White Album too many times and made an album of his own.
Which is precisely what happened, I guess. But what if
Johnny had been subtly guided in the creation of Black
Fever? Just a gentle nudge here, a hint there. Perhaps from
Lilly, but who knows? Johnny doesn't. It's all a black hole
to him. Perhaps another punk was being groomed as well, in
case Johnny OD'd or set fire to the tape. Lilly may be in
charge, or more likely, she was an agent of someone else.
Johnny got too big and cocky. He was sacrificed to the
Sleepers so the other could finish the album. (If I were
running it, the other would be Pat Boone, recording another
'metal' album, but that's neither here nor there)
Now the other realizes Johnny is out and about, but doesn't
realize he has the amnesia. Dazzled with promises of riches
and occult power, he knows he can't let Johnny live long
enough to queer his deal with the powers of darkness. He
must kill Johnny. But being an inept, burnt-out wannabe rock
star (whose meager talents and sanity were both burned away
during the making of his Black Fever tape) he botches
attempt after attempt. So Johnny gradually realizes that
something is up.
I wrote a novel--The Great Fracas Plastics Explosion--about
a fella who had a similar memory fix put on him by the
infamous Texas Wizards' Guild. The spoiler was that if he
could develop a profound relationship with someone, he could
remember as far back as his relationship with that person
extended. You could work it so one of the players has the
key to Johnny's memory. If you wanted to deliberately key
the key to that date, then perhaps one of the players has a
dub of a dub of a dub of a music video for one of the tracks
from Black Fever which shows scenes of Johnny having his
balls handed to him by the Sleepers. The PC is a big fan and
wants Johnny to sign it. Johnny gets the migraines after
seeing it, and brutal flashbacks. If he can break through
some more, he realizes that the music on the tape is not
his, but the other's.
If you really want to put cigars to the soles of his feet,
then let a Sleeper agent get wind of the activity of the
other. I'm going to start calling 'the other' Jean-Paul,
because I like the idea of him being French. Le Fievre Noir
has a sinister ring to it. So you have a Sleeper tracing
Jean-Paul, who's trying to kill Johnny, who hasn't got a
clue. The "record company" has the master for Le Fievre
Noir, and they're doing "post-production work" with it. God
knows what that's going to mean for the future of humanity.
The "record company" incidentally, is probably sick of both
Johnny *and* Jean-Paul, and is sending big, flashily-dressed
goons to erase them. Meanwhile, leaks from the album, and
traces of what the Sleepers did to Johnny are oozing into
the OU, exciting interest.
We've got potential for Johnny recovering his memory and and
realizing all is not what it seems.
Can you talk one of the players into being a follow-along
mental health worker (vaguely analogous to a probation
officer) who checks in with Johnny? Players could be fans or
rock historians (a film crew from VH-1's Where Are They Now
could have a *lot* of fun here) or occultists who realize
the stars are right. I think there's enough room for
players. If you wanted to get crazy, Jean-Paul could be a PC
who joins the team when he realizes he's in danger, too.
Good luck with the campaign. Sounds fun.
