What he failed to realise is part of being imortal is the loss of your
ability to ascend.  (The Compte is a special case)

Sure, he's now the biggest, baddest, toughest thing on the face of the
planet - but it's slowly dawning on him that he has no-where to go from
here.  And getting rid of immortality is a lot harder than getting it in
the first place...
