Actually, I don't think Campbell would be at all taken aback by the
quote (if he were still alive.)  A prison term is a standard rite of
pasage for gang members, and all rites of passage into manhood are
ritualizations of the Hero's Journey.

The best stuff I've read on this subject is a book -- and I know I've
plugged it on this list before -- called _The Time Falling Bodies Take
To Light_ by William Irwin Thompson.  He also deals with stuff like this
in some of his other books, like _Coming Into Being_.  The most relevant
analysis of modern mythology and cultural history I've ever read.
