ObUA: "Emerald City" is a nickname for Seattle, a festering vat of 
OU-osity.

This weekend in Seattle brought the Fremont Solstice Festival, a 
long-running annual weekend celebration in the post-hippie neighborhood 
of Fremont. Features included a large crafts fair, live music, and a 
parade of freaked-out floats that drifted through the everpresent miasma 
of pot smoke. At the end of the parade there was a pageant featuring a 
couple dozen people in some rather spectactular batik costumes, vaguely 
reminescent of that French Olympics ceremony from a few years back. The 
pageant was a wordless depiction of a postmodern creation myth, drawing 
on a variety of cultures and symbol systems including a Thunderbird, an 
Olmec sun, groups of dancers representing the four elements, clockwork & 
barcode techno-conquerors, mud people, and a 15' tall winged creature 
said to represent "the eternal moment." It was a bit baffling, but if 
Alex Abel had been there he'd have told Eponymous to shoot someone, and 
fast. To celebrate, I got a sunburn.
