Each avatar need not be exactly the same as the next.
Otherwise how would archetype through another out of
the Statosphere. The Emperor Archetype, based on
Tarot, that Norton channelled would give off a
prescence, a majestic awe, that would make Norton's
"subjects" unable to refuse his requests. To do
otherwise would be treasonous to the spiritual king.

Of course, permutating Archetypes is another
possibility. The Sinister Old Man is another
permutation of the Fool. It is the Fool that has
learned wisdom, but suffered privation as payment. The
best example is Odin. Odin hung himself upside down
over the abyss, staring into that inky void, for nine
days, before gaining mystical insight. Of course his
eye had to plucked out as payment. Odin is quite a bit
more cynical after his abyss experience.

The mutating of archetypes could be another symptom of
Renunciation. Perhaps the Merchant-channelling Norton
renounced himself as a failure and took up the Hermit
archetype, gratifying all his material losses as gains
channelling the penniless savant, The Hermit, cryptic
and shrewed, the Hermit mumbles great secrets in
bizarre, skewed logic, often people, being impatient,
would ignore the ramblings.

After all, when was the last time you stopped to
listen to that ranting, unwashed homeless guy,
frothing on about Jesus, the CIA and UFOs?

Cheers,

Chris.

Cheers,

Chris.
