Sort of. Despite the fact that a friend of mine broke a Ecoline bottle on my carpet floor, I spent a day
washing the appartment from floor to ceiling and I got 3/4 of my damage deposit back.
It's pretty scary to see that, while a few of us got some deposit back, it seems that's NEVER the FULL
damage deposit: only a part. Like the appartment's owner considers that, since I gave him money, it's
his. No way, sir: It's my money, and I allow you to keep it if I really mess up your appartment. Maybe
we get into the symbolism of money in modern culture. Maybe only a plutomancer's minor spell can
get this deposit back. Maybe this mony is gone, but where? I can easily imagine a hidden power that
keeps all damage deposits to fulfill some twisted goals.
I don't know how it works in the US of A, but here in Belgium, damage deposit is not property of the
appartement's owner: it's put on a blocked account owned by the two sides, owner and renter, and this
account can only be unblocked with the signature of both. The interrest generated by the money is
owner's property, though. What's the symbolic meaning of this?
Sorry if I can't make myself understood, I'm not very aware of the vocabulary about
appartment ownership (owner: the guy who's appartement is; renter: the guy who lives in it and who
pays fee each month for this privilege).
